Do you know hat certain association and groups give away or even sell the personal information of their members?
In order to become a member of an association or a group, you have no choice but to identify your self by giving information such as your name, your address, your phone number and many more personal information (gender, date of birth, etc.)
Some association and group do not hesitate to disclose that information to different partners who, supposedly, want the best for you. Sometimes this exchange can be done for free or for some money. Of course, once the list of information is exchanged… where your information will end up? Maybe the buyer will in turn resell your information to a third entity, then to a fourth, etc.
Indeed, your information represents a true pot of gold for these advertisers, who will not hesitate to contact you by phone, mail or e-mail.
Most of the associations and groups will permit you to withdraw from these lists of trade by filling out a hidden form, but the real problem is that it will be already too late! As example, you start your membership on Monday and ask for the withdrawal form on Tuesday. Too late, the form as been exchange on Monday night!
Thus, before starting a membership with an association or a group be sure they will respect your privacy.
At the Canadian Association of Therapist in Complementary Medicine (ACTMD), personal information concerning the members is strictly confidential. As proof, to see his/her name in the list of members published on the web site of the ACTMD, the therapist has to fill out an authorization form and even then only the name, business phone number, language, work city and specialties will be published. In brief, only the professional information could be accessible to the public according to the member wishes.
By this article, we wanted to inform you that at the ACTMD the privacy of the personal information of our members is a priority. The information provided are used only in order for us to communicate with our members and to be able to answer the insurance companies who need to confirm the membership with the ACTMD prior to reimburse their clients.
In conclusion, if privacy is a criterion really important to you, than you have there a good reason to become a member of the ACTMD.
